I love autumn and late summer. We are busy every single weekend. Sure, it gets tiring, but I just remind myself that in a few short months we could be home-bound for several months due to winter weather. We love going apple picking and I love coming home with a whole bunch of fresh you pick apples to cook with.
My boys are at an age where they enjoy helping in the kitchen. Even Brian is helping me pick out recipes sometimes. You’d think that we have a favorite, you know, the best place to pick apples or a favorite apple orchard. And, I guess we kinda do (Milburn!). But here you go–
- Apple Picking NJ
- Apple Picking Pennsylvania
- Apple Picking Delaware
- (and yet, our favorite is in Maryland!)
Apple Picking Near Me
Keep in mind that these are working orchards. They may not have the giant corn mazes, hayrides, and commercialism that now comes with fall. Check the website ahead of time.
I have a separate post on Fun Farms for Families to Visit, if you are looking for hayrides and farm animals.
When is Apple Picking Season?
In the Mid-Atlantic region, including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland, apple picking season typically starts in early September and lasts through late October, though some varieties may be available as early as late August or as late as early November, depending on the weather and the specific orchard.
Different apple varieties ripen at different times, so it’s best to check with local orchards for the specific timing of their apple-picking season.
How Much do You Pick Apples Cost?
For “you-pick” apples, you can generally expect to pay between $1.50 to $3.00 per pound in the Mid-Atlantic region, depending on the orchard, location, and apple variety. Some orchards may have a flat fee per bag, which typically ranges from $20 to $40 for a half-bushel (about 20-24 pounds of apples).
Additional fees may apply for admission, hayrides, or other activities, so it’s always a good idea to check the orchard’s website or call ahead to get the most accurate pricing information.
Apple Picking NJ
My husband grew up in New Jersey, and it’s so cool to know that some of the places he went apple picking as a child are still around today. Make a day of it and go apple picking in New Jersey!

This post is several years old but gets updated regularly to check links.
And, for my special needs families reading this list, here are some things for you to think about when you visit with your child. Any outing is a great time to teach or reinforce skills.
Working OT, PT, and Speech Skills into Apple Picking
Of course, if your child has disabilities, there are many ways to incorporate all the senses into this activity to increase learning. Including:
- touch/sensory of all the new things around you
- science/nature discussion about apple growing and what they get used for
- smell/sensory of all the apples, inside the buildings, the foods
- taste/sensory and mouth-touch sensory
- sight/vision of all the different colors and new sights around you
- manners/social as far as waiting in lines, etc.
- new sounds
- fine motor skills with the actual apple picking
- words/verbal-narrate your whole day to introduce new vocabulary
Enjoy those apples!
