Where to Even Begin with an IEP

A Simple Starting Point for Parents

Starting the IEP process can feel confusing and intimidating, especially if this is all new to you. You may not know what questions to ask, what actually matters, or what to focus on first. That’s normal.

I tell all my advocacy clients this, because it surprises many parents: successful advocacy isn’t one big, magical moment. It’s not that one IEP meeting where everyone suddenly agrees and you walk out with the perfect plan. That’s the fantasy.

Real advocacy is much less glamorous. It’s a series of small, consistent steps: an email, a conversation, a meeting, reading something new. It’s slowly chipping away at what isn’t working in your IEP, while strengthening what is. Piece by piece and bit by bit.

That’s how you get results. You don’t have to do it all at once; just take small steps.

You Don’t Have to Figure This Out Alone

You don’t need to understand everything about IEPs right now, and you don’t need to do this by yourself. Thousands of parents start exactly where you are: confused, worried, and just trying to do the right thing for their child.

Ask a question in our online community. Every question is answered by an advocate.

Your First IEP Tools

Once you understand the basics, having the right tools makes everything easier. These free resources were created specifically for parents who want to feel prepared, without getting overwhelmed.

Start with one. You don’t need all of them today.

A stack of educational worksheets, including a free iep binder, an iep organizer, a student vision statement, and other planning documents, is spread on the table. Nearby, a cup sits among colorful pens.

This helps you organize your IEP files so they make sense. And you’ll know what to keep and for how long.
