Veterans Day Writing Prompts (8 Free PDFs)

You know what gets forgotten in the pumpkin-spice chaos of November? Veterans Day. It’s stuck awkwardly between Halloween sugar crashes and pre-Thanksgiving shopping lists, and somehow always sneaks up on us.

But it’s important. And it deserves more than just a mention during morning announcements or a coloring page with a flag. Veterans Day is a meaningful opportunity to help kids understand service, sacrifice, and citizenship. And no, they don’t need a history degree or a family member in uniform to appreciate the day. Just a little reflection—and that’s where these writing prompts come in.

I’ve created a set of free, printable Veterans Day Writing Prompts that you can use at home or in the classroom. They’re appropriate for a range of grade levels (think K–8), and they encourage kids to think about what Veterans Day means, why we celebrate it, and how they might honor those who served. There are 10 prompts in all, and they’re open-ended enough to work for reluctant writers or the kids who write you a novel about everything (you know the ones).

These prompts are especially great if your child struggles with social-emotional learning or needs more structure for writing. Bonus: they can also be used for speech sessions, journaling, or art projects. You might even spark a conversation at home about military families in your own circle—many of whom are navigating IEPs and 504s in schools that don’t always “get it.”

So, let’s take a pause from the chaos and help our kids connect with something bigger than themselves. Download the free PDF and give them the space to reflect, write, and maybe even spark a little gratitude along the way.
