What are Core Memories in Children?

No pressure, right? Just thinking that every single life experience they have…..could contribute to their personality….sure, no pressure.

But here’s the thing—taking a step back to slow down and really be with your kids? It’s crucial. Not just for them, but for you too. And you’re probably already doing this, often. So give yourself a break.

Seriously, even before the movie, this was happening anyway. All of our life experiences contribute to who we are.

And yes, these can be both positive and negative experiences, so it’s important to stack the deck with as many positive ones as possible.

But here’s the thing, most of us are doing so many great things every day with our kids, and we don’t even realize it.

For example, I was so worried about creating all of these “experiences” for my non-disabled child. I want him to have as normal an upbringing is possible, but he witnesses a lot of traumatic stuff (seizures) that other little kids don’t experience. So I was out here killing myself, trying to overcompensate for that.

One day, we had a chat on the way home from basketball practice. You know what he brought up? The many times that I took him for Chick-Fil-A after basketball practice. How we used to go to Philly Pretzel Factory on Free Pretzel Day and get soft pretzels. The lunch box we used to take to the community pool in the summer and the snacks I put in it.

Ok, so maybe too many of our “core memories” revolve around junk food. Still, it’s the fun, little things that made him feel loved, safe and appreciated. Not the Sixers games or the amusement parks. Get it?

We can all do this without killing ourselves or, our bank accounts!
