I won’t bore you with my litany of reasons as to why there hasn’t been a Tuesday to-do list in quite some time. Hopefully you’ve still been keeping yourself busy with advocacy and lobbying.
This is both a national issue and a state issue.
Basic talking point:
School vouchers or privatization or school savings accounts….whatever they are calling it these days–these programs take money from the public schools and funnel it to private and religious interests. In most cases, children with disabilities DO NOT benefit nor can they even participate in these programs.
I have talked about school choice and school vouchers a zillion times on this blog.
But, we need to call again.
Your choice of conversation:
First, you can call your people and say that you are opposed to all types of voucher programs or savings account programs, as they deplete money from our schools.
Or, if you know that saying this is just banging your head against a wall and that your legislator is NOT going to change their mind on this issue, change the conversation. Instead, say:
- My child, due to their disabilities, is unable to participate in school choice programs.
- How can you support a program that does not involve ALL children?
- What are you going to do to ensure that ALL children can participate in these programs?
- How will you ensure that my child will still receive FAPE despite depleting funding from their school?
You get the idea, right? Basically if we’re going to resign ourselves to the fact that they are not going to change their support, we are going to hold their feet to the fire as far as being accountable to OUR kids.
Now, go forth…find your legislators, and call!
