Halloween Costumes Ideas for a Seizure Helmet or Wheelchair

If you’re reading this, chances are you’re a special needs mom, and to a child who has enough seizures to warrant a helmet. We don’t have time to put together Pinterest-worthy costumes in our free time! What free time?

I am just so tired today, I have a bad foot. So when I looked in Kevin’s room and saw him relaxing with a book on his bed, I couldn’t resist laying down next to him. He’s wearing a Philadelphia Eagles jersey today because it was my intent to take him with me to the Acme and they give you an extra 5% off if you wear Eagles gear. But my foot hurt too much to go. I was laying there, just thinking about things and it hit me.

Duh! Football players wear helmets. Right then I made a plan to get online and see what I could do to fix up his seizure helmet to match his jersey.

I found big sheets of felt, which I think with two-sided tape will do exactly what I want to do for the day. But, while I was perusing costume ideas, I found a whole bunch of costumes that could also include a seizure helmet.

I am not a DIY or crafty person, I need simple.

Here are some photos and descriptions to get your creative juices flowing. This doesn’t have to be hard–a baseball jersey with the seizure helmet crafted into a baseball helmet, maybe carry a bat if not too much trouble. Simple!

Race Car Drive Halloween costume

The theme of this one is actually “Speed Demon” hence the demon mask. But, I would just use the suit and make the helmet into a race car helmet.

Astronaut Halloween Costume

This one is my favorite. We’ve been obsessed with NASA since we went there two years ago.

If your child is a walker, they can use this astronaut backpack to hold their candy!

Again, I would just buy the suit and use our own seizure helmet, redecorated.

Fireman Halloween Costume

A real hose that squirts water! How cute! What a great part of a fireman costume.

And look at this DIY cardboard box fire truck you can get. This would be perfect with the helmet, and then fasten this around a wheelchair.

And the simplest one of them all…..

DIY super easy construction worker costume

This vest is only $5!!! on Oriental Trading.

The child can wear their own clothes, the $5 vest and make their helmet bright yellow. DONE. Make a stop sign out of cardboard, and this vest can also quickly become a school crossing guard. Simple!

I hope this helps. I love to browse Pinterest and look at all the great costumes. I just don’t have the time nor the ability to make them a reality. This, this I can do!

Goodwill Halloween Costumes~Do it!

You know who I really dislike around Halloween time? Heidi Klum. Every year she gets all this press about her fabulous costume idea. Then, the story will go on to tell you that she spent many hours in a makeup chair with professional theater/stage makeup artists.

Is that really a Halloween costume? I mean, yeah, mine would be fantastic too if I had an unlimited budget and access to the best costumes and makeup artists.

Us common folk don’t have that.

But, we do have Goodwill.

I’ll be the first to admit, that mid to late October, I have been known to hop online and order a $40 costume. Ugh! $40, really? For something they wear for about 4 hours, 2 at school and 2 at home?

Give me a break.

And so often, you hear Gen Xers like myself say, “Hmph, when I was a kid, we had to make our costumes.” We did! And we loved it.

When we bought boxed costumes, they had staples in the plastic mask that scratched your face, the mask made you all sweaty and the rubber bands pulled our hair. Amirite?

So, since it’s still summer, I am making sure that this week we start perusing websites for costume ideas and hitting Goodwill this weekend.

12 Reasons to buy your Halloween costume at Goodwill

They have their own Pinterest boards dedicated to helping you come up with ideas.
They have several websites dedicated to helping you come up with ideas.
The costumes will be DIY which will help your kids (and you!) think creatively.
The costume possibilities are really limitless.
You are keeping something out of a dumpster or landfill, which helps the environment.
You are not only spending quality time with your kids making something, you are teaching them the value of reusing items or not buying into consumerism.
They also have a great assortment of Halloween decorations and other items which can be repurposed for Halloween. (ideas available on their Facebook page or the other sites I provided above)
More likely than not, will be cheaper than purchasing a ready-made costume.

15 DIY Halloween Costumes for Kids

{Super simple, for the last minute mom!}

I dropped the ball. Again.

Back in September, I was perusing Pinterest for Halloween costumes. This is it! This is the year that we are going to MAKE our Halloween costume, rather than pay $50 at the last minute and pray that the UPS guy gets here in time. THIS IS OUR YEAR.

I showed my 8-year-old how to search on Pinterest, and he was putting in different terms and found several different things that he liked.

Fast forward to today, October 8. We haven’t started anything. Haven’t even looked in the garage to see if we have a cardboard box that could be made into a Rubik’s cube. Haven’t even looked through our closets for old clothing that could be torn/stained/cut on purpose to make a costume.

I know myself. If I haven’t started it by October 8, it’s not gonna happen.

So I went to Ollie’s and Big Lots. He’s “too old” or so he says, for a purchased costume as basic as TMNT. Being 8 ain’t what it used to be.

What are we going to do about Halloween? Hell if I know!

For starters, I have added the word SIMPLE to my internet searches. Just hoping he finds something he likes.

He loves video games. So really hoping that he likes the Pokemon Go costume that is shown.
