Can you freeze eggs?

Backyard chickens are a really popular trend right now. And, as anyone can tell you when the girls lay eggs, you have a lot of eggs! I have several friends who are giving away lots of eggs, so I thought I’d take a look and see if we can freeze them.

How much food does your family throw out each week? Americans waste roughly 30 to 40-percent of the food supply. This is something I’ve been working on in our house, for economic and environmental reasons. If you’re tired of wasting food and money, it’s time to start thinking about how you can preserve those foods. Let’s look at five things I learned I could freeze. (Ok, the flour one I knew.)

5 Things Most People Don’t know you can Freeze

  1. Eggs-Eggs can actually be frozen. The key is to mix the eggs as if you were going to cook scrambled eggs before freezing. Or, you can separate the whites and yolks. You’ll want to make sure that you store these in airtight containers, especially yolks. Fat, which yolks have a lot of, can soak up freezer odors so make sure you protect them.
  1. Milk-This may sound crazy, but you can freeze milk. You don’t have to do anything special either. All you need to do is remove some of the milk from the plastic jug to allow for expansion. Liquids expand when they freeze. When you’re ready to use the milk, just let it thaw in the fridge. This tip can save you so much money when you find a great deal on milk.
  1. Flour-Does your family not use a lot of flour? Or maybe you like to make bread from time to time but don’t use a lot of bread flour. You can freeze the flour. Place the bag of flour in a freezer storage bag and remove all the air. Store in the freezer until ready to use. Many people store flour in the freezer when they have a moth problem in their pantry. It is even suggested that you freeze flour for 48 hours to kill any insect eggs that may be in the flour.
  1. Potato Chips-This is definitely something that most people don’t know. You can freeze potato chips. The moisture has been removed during the cooking process, so you don’t have to worry about the chips getting soggy. Freeze in their original bag for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature and enjoy.
  1. Coffee-Want to keep your coffee fresh? Store it in the freezer. You can repackage the coffee into portions that you would use within 2 to 3 days. When ready to use, let the coffee come to room temperature before brewing.

You can freeze so many foods so that your family is always using what you purchase. Whether it’s eggs or potato chips, you can freeze many foods to prolong their shelf life. I’m excited about being able to keep some things that I find on sale too!
