Coming soon! Screen Free Week 2016, sponsored by Commercial Free Childhood. I don’t think that screens are terrible…they certainly offer tremendous value to today’s kids and education. But, they also invite sitting…and sitting is the new smoking. Today, more Americans are dooming themselves to health issues by being sedentary than by smoking. And our kids are not moving around enough. Screen Free Week was developed just to encourage more movement by families and we’ve been participating for years.
Of course you won’t hear much about this on TV…because they don’t want you to turn off your TV.
On May 2-8, children, families, and communities around the world will rediscover the joys of life beyond the screen. Unplug from digital entertainment and spend your free time playing, reading, daydreaming, creating, exploring, and connecting with family and friends.
*work and school assignments not included.
I love this week because at the end of winter and early spring, we are really in a rut. By participating in Screen Free Week, it gets us out of that rut and into new patterns.
Visit the Screen Free Week website, and you will find fantastic resources–Ideas for Teachers, going beyond one week, parent resources and activity guides and charts and pledges for kids to sign. Kids love signing things and doing charts! That website has a bunch of great ideas, so be sure to check it out.
Have a great screen free week! And yes….I will be trying to do this myself, greatly minimizing my time online as I feel it’s important to role model this for my kids.
